Where you can go alone

Some places serve one portion from the start. Others, mostly the barbecue places, begin at two. Below: a line of Korean to show at those doors, and the places that take one person.

Reading the marks on a restaurant card

  • One portion available - you can go alone and order for one.
  • Welcome alone, order two - they will seat one person; the grill starts at two portions. Twice the price, but not a refusal.
  • Turns solo diners away - reports say somebody was refused for being alone. The rarest mark and the most valuable.
  • Being checked - nobody has confirmed it and the name does not say. If you have been, tap once on that restaurant's page.
  • How it is known - 'checked' means somebody asked, 'from visitors' means people who went there said so, and 'guessed from the dish' means gukbap or naengmyeon, which arrive as one person's portion anyway.

Where it works, where it does not

Gukbap, gimbap, noodles, rice bowls, snack bars and convenience stores are built for one. Nothing to ask.

Places that grill at the table - pork belly, intestines, dakgalbi - often start at two portions. The second line is for that moment.
