This week's deep dive

We add one detailed, hard-to-find tip every week.

Ordering on Coupang as a visitor in 4 steps: English, sign-up, card, hotel delivery

Visitors can order on Coupang and pick it up at their hotel (Coupang, August 2026). Four steps.

Shopping and tax refunds: do not leave money behind

Visitors can reclaim the VAT on purchases above a set amount. Whether you actually get it depends on knowing the procedure.

Do not carry your bags: lockers and luggage delivery

If your concert is on the day you check out, there is no reason to drag a suitcase around. Several places will hold it.

SafetySeptember 7, 2026

If you lose something: wallet, passport, phone

Things tend to come back in Korea. People leave a laptop on a café table while they use the bathroom. Still, if something is gone, there is an order to follow.

When Korean fans go looking for returned tickets

Sold out is not the end. Seats held by bank transfer and never paid for are cancelled automatically at a fixed time, and those seats go back on sale.

Culture tipSeptember 5, 2026

For Korean fans, ticketing is three chances, not one

Tickets for a Korean show do not all go on sale at once. There is an order to it, and Korean fans know which round they belong to.

SafetySeptember 5, 2026

Korean fans do not use proxy ticketing either

Fan-to-fan ticket trading is common in Korea, but paying a stranger first is not. Korean press has repeatedly reported proxy-ticketing scams aimed at overseas fans.

Culture tipSeptember 5, 2026

Korean fans learn the chants before the show

In a Korean concert hall the audience is not there to watch. Every song has its own call-and-response pattern, and it is called the fan chant.

Save timeSeptember 5, 2026

Standing is timed to the gates, not to the show

Standing tickets have no seat number. They have an entry number, and people go in in that order and pick where to stand.

The Korean couple calendar: 100 days, Pepero Day, Black Day

Korean couples count the days since they started dating. The 100th is the first real milestone, then 200, 300 and 1,000. Some couples start counting at 22.

Culture tipSeptember 5, 2026

When do couples hold hands in Korea? Is there an order to skinship?

It splits before and after the confession. There is no set number of dates; what matters is whether the relationship has been made official.

Culture tipSeptember 5, 2026

When does dating officially start in Korea?

On the day one person asks to date and the other agrees. That moment is called gobaek, a confession, and that day is day one.

Last train after a K-pop concert in Seoul: why weekends are different

At most Seoul venues the Saturday and Sunday last trains leave 50 to 60 minutes earlier than on weekdays. And concerts are usually on weekends. Reading the weekday time and missing the train is the most common way a night goes wrong.

Culture tipSeptember 4, 2026

Can foreigners buy K-pop concert tickets in Korea without a Korean phone number?

Yes. NOL World, formerly Interpark Global, verifies you with a passport. You do it once by QR from your phone and it stays valid for a year.

Save moneySeptember 4, 2026

What is the minimum purchase for a tax refund in Korea? (2026)

15,000 won per receipt. It came down from 30,000 won in 2024. Any guide still saying "30,000 won or more" is out of date.

Getting back to Seoul from Inspire Arena after a concert

The nearest station is Incheon Airport Terminal 2 on the Airport Railroad, about 3.9 km from the arena. That is not a walk.

WeatherSeptember 4, 2026

Can you bring an umbrella to an outdoor concert venue in Korea?

Usually not. Goyang Sports Complex and Incheon Main Stadium are open-air stadiums with no roof, and umbrellas are usually refused at the door. If it rains, you get rained on.

Goyang Sports Complex: the last train after the show, and what happens when it rains

The nearest station is Daehwa on Line 3, about a 7-minute walk. Weekday last trains: 24:03 toward Yaksu (reaches central Seoul) and 24:36 toward Samsong (stops outside Seoul). Weekends: 23:03 toward Yaksu and 23:36 toward Samsong.

When do sold-out K-pop concert tickets come back?

Right after the payment deadline, most of all. Yes24 cancels unpaid bookings at 23:29 and Melon Ticket at 23:59:59, and those seats return to sale.

Money: where to change it, and how far a card goes

South Korea is almost fully cashless. Even if you buy a 1,000-won item at a convenience store, you pay by card. There's no need to exchange large amounts of cash.

Culture tipAugust 24, 2026

Concert day: lightsticks, the merch queue, photocard trades

The official lightstick pairs over Bluetooth in the venue and changes colour with the songs. You can enjoy the show without one, but the moment the whole floor turns the same colour lands differently when you are holding one.

Getting aroundAugust 17, 2026

Leaving Seoul: KTX or the express bus

The KTX gets you from Seoul to Busan in about two and a half hours. Gyeongbu-line trains leave from Seoul Station, Honam-line trains usually from Yongsan — check which station your ticket says.

Staying onlineAugust 10, 2026

Data: eSIM or a physical SIM

If your phone takes an eSIM, buy one before you fly and switch it on as you land. No queue at the airport counter.

Getting aroundAugust 3, 2026

Your first day: one T-money card covers it

Buy a T-money card at any convenience store in the arrivals hall and top it up with cash — the card is 2,500–4,000 won, top-ups go in 1,000-won steps.

HealthJuly 27, 2026

If you get ill: pharmacies, clinics, insurance

For something minor, start at a pharmacy. Look for the green cross; most stay open into the evening on weekdays.

WeatherJuly 20, 2026

When you come decides what you pack

Late June through July is the rainy season. Expect sudden downpours rather than all-day drizzle, so keep a folding umbrella in your bag.

Korean Dining and Bathhouse Etiquette to Know

You'll need to take off your shoes at floor-seating restaurants and hanok cafes — most have a shoe rack at the entrance or an obvious spot to leave them, so glance at what other guests are doing if you're unsure.

Deeper Time-Saving Tips — Cutting Lines at Airports, Trains, and Theme Parks

Incheon Airport is split into Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2), and which one your airline uses varies — Korean Air, Delta, Air France, and a few others use T2, while most other airlines use T1. Double-check your terminal on your ticket before you leave, since arriving at the wrong one costs an extra 15–20 minutes on the shuttle bus.

Deeper Money-Saving Tips for Korea — Flights to Souvenirs

Flights are often relatively cheaper if you book on a Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, and booking 3–8 weeks ahead usually beats peak-season prices — use Skyscanner's 'whole month' fare view to scan for cheap dates in advance.

Deeper Safety Tips for Solo & Women Travelers

Eating alone ('honbap') and drinking alone ('honsul') are completely normal in Korea now — many restaurants even have dedicated single-seat counters, so there's no need to feel self-conscious traveling solo.

K-pop Fan Culture You Should Know Before the Concert

South Korea is not a tipping culture — whether at restaurants, taxis, or hotels, you only need to pay the amount written on the bill, and you don't have to worry about calculating how much extra to add.

How to Actually Save Money on a Trip to Korea

Exchange money at a private money changer in downtown areas (like Myeongdong's exchange alley) rather than the airport — rates are noticeably better. Travel debit cards like Travel Wallet or Travelog charge no exchange fee and use the real-time rate.

How to Travel Korea Without Worrying About Safety

Korea is genuinely one of the safer countries in the world to walk around alone late at night — subways and streets stay busy well past midnight, and convenience stores with CCTV are everywhere.

Sort these out before you fly

Three things travellers most often wish they had booked earlier.

Booking through this link costs you nothing extra - the price is exactly the same.

If a booking or a purchase completes, we separately receive a commission.

Tickets and tours, booked ahead

Palace tickets, hanbok rental, transport passes and day tours - reserved in advance instead of queueing on the day.

Data the moment you land

Install an eSIM before you fly and you are online the second the plane doors open - no hunting for a SIM counter at the airport.

Before you pack anything

This trip has real money riding on flights and tickets. Delays, lost luggage, a sudden clinic visit - cover takes minutes to set up and costs about a coffee a day.

Straight to Seoul Station

The express train runs between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station, and the ticket can be bought before you fly. The all-stop train calls everywhere, and some of its services turn back before Seoul Station.

A ride waiting at the airport

Book the pickup before you arrive. Useful after a long flight, and after a concert that ends past the last train.

Flight delayed 3+ hours?

If your flight was delayed over 3 hours or cancelled, regulations may entitle you to up to 600 EUR from the airline. Most passengers never claim it. Checking is free - a fee applies only if they win it for you.

Check your compensation

1. Before You Fly

  • •If your country needs K-ETA (Korea's electronic travel authorization), apply online before departure - boarding can be denied without it.
  • •Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
  • •A prepaid eSIM/SIM bought online in advance is usually cheaper than roaming.
  • •Get a T-money card - one card covers subway, bus, and even convenience store payments. Available at the airport or any convenience store.

2. Booking Flights

  • •Book as soon as concert dates are announced - fares climb fast once fandom demand kicks in.
  • •Incheon (ICN) is the main international airport; Gimpo (GMP) mainly handles domestic and a few short-haul international routes.
  • •Compare prices on Skyscanner or Google Flights, then book directly on the airline's site for easier changes and refunds.

3. Booking Accommodation

  • •Prioritize a place within walking distance or a short transit ride from the venue - K-Style Trip's map shows nearby stays for each concert.
  • •Agoda and Booking.com both accept international cards and offer free-cancellation options, good for a first booking.
  • •Rooms near venues can sell out weeks ahead during concert season - book alongside your flight, not after.

4. Getting Concert Tickets

  • •Most K-pop concerts sell tickets through Interpark (NOL), Melon Ticket, or YES24.
  • •NOL Interpark has a separate English-language global site, which tends to be the most accessible for international fans.
  • •Popular shows can sell out within seconds of sales opening - mark the exact sale time and confirm your card works for overseas payments beforehand.
  • •If official sales are sold out, watch for cancellation restocks or use only official resale platforms - unofficial scalpers carry real fraud risk.

5. Shopping & Tax Refunds

  • •Stores marked "Tax Free" refund VAT on purchases over a certain amount when you leave the country.
  • •Keep your receipts and passport handy, and use the self-service refund kiosks near customs at the airport for the fastest process.

6. Useful Apps on the Ground

  • •Use Naver Map or Kakao Map instead of Google Maps - Google's transit and walking directions are limited in Korea.
  • •Papago tends to handle Korean more naturally than Google Translate.
  • •Check K-Style Trip for concerts, restaurants, and lodging in five languages, plus real visitor reviews and travel routes on the board.
