This week's deep dive
We add one detailed, hard-to-find tip every week.
Ordering on Coupang as a visitor in 4 steps: English, sign-up, card, hotel delivery
Visitors can order on Coupang and pick it up at their hotel (Coupang, August 2026). Four steps.
Shopping and tax refunds: do not leave money behind
Visitors can reclaim the VAT on purchases above a set amount. Whether you actually get it depends on knowing the procedure.
What is the minimum purchase for a tax refund in Korea? (2026)
15,000 won per receipt. It came down from 30,000 won in 2024. Any guide still saying "30,000 won or more" is out of date.
Money: where to change it, and how far a card goes
South Korea is almost fully cashless. Even if you buy a 1,000-won item at a convenience store, you pay by card. There's no need to exchange large amounts of cash.
Deeper Money-Saving Tips for Korea — Flights to Souvenirs
Flights are often relatively cheaper if you book on a Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, and booking 3–8 weeks ahead usually beats peak-season prices — use Skyscanner's 'whole month' fare view to scan for cheap dates in advance.
How to Actually Save Money on a Trip to Korea
Exchange money at a private money changer in downtown areas (like Myeongdong's exchange alley) rather than the airport — rates are noticeably better. Travel debit cards like Travel Wallet or Travelog charge no exchange fee and use the real-time rate.
Sort these out before you fly
Three things travellers most often wish they had booked earlier.
Booking through this link costs you nothing extra - the price is exactly the same.

Tickets and tours, booked ahead
Palace tickets, hanbok rental, transport passes and day tours - reserved in advance instead of queueing on the day.
Data the moment you land
Install an eSIM before you fly and you are online the second the plane doors open - no hunting for a SIM counter at the airport.
Before you pack anything
This trip has real money riding on flights and tickets. Delays, lost luggage, a sudden clinic visit - cover takes minutes to set up and costs about a coffee a day.
Straight to Seoul Station
The express train runs between Incheon Airport and Seoul Station, and the ticket can be bought before you fly. The all-stop train calls everywhere, and some of its services turn back before Seoul Station.
A ride waiting at the airport
Book the pickup before you arrive. Useful after a long flight, and after a concert that ends past the last train.
Flight delayed 3+ hours?
If your flight was delayed over 3 hours or cancelled, regulations may entitle you to up to 600 EUR from the airline. Most passengers never claim it. Checking is free - a fee applies only if they win it for you.
1. Before You Fly
- •If your country needs K-ETA (Korea's electronic travel authorization), apply online before departure - boarding can be denied without it.
- •Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
- •A prepaid eSIM/SIM bought online in advance is usually cheaper than roaming.
- •Get a T-money card - one card covers subway, bus, and even convenience store payments. Available at the airport or any convenience store.
2. Booking Flights
- •Book as soon as concert dates are announced - fares climb fast once fandom demand kicks in.
- •Incheon (ICN) is the main international airport; Gimpo (GMP) mainly handles domestic and a few short-haul international routes.
- •Compare prices on Skyscanner or Google Flights, then book directly on the airline's site for easier changes and refunds.
3. Booking Accommodation
- •Prioritize a place within walking distance or a short transit ride from the venue - K-Style Trip's map shows nearby stays for each concert.
- •Agoda and Booking.com both accept international cards and offer free-cancellation options, good for a first booking.
- •Rooms near venues can sell out weeks ahead during concert season - book alongside your flight, not after.
4. Getting Concert Tickets
- •Most K-pop concerts sell tickets through Interpark (NOL), Melon Ticket, or YES24.
- •NOL Interpark has a separate English-language global site, which tends to be the most accessible for international fans.
- •Popular shows can sell out within seconds of sales opening - mark the exact sale time and confirm your card works for overseas payments beforehand.
- •If official sales are sold out, watch for cancellation restocks or use only official resale platforms - unofficial scalpers carry real fraud risk.
5. Shopping & Tax Refunds
- •Stores marked "Tax Free" refund VAT on purchases over a certain amount when you leave the country.
- •Keep your receipts and passport handy, and use the self-service refund kiosks near customs at the airport for the fastest process.
6. Useful Apps on the Ground
- •Use Naver Map or Kakao Map instead of Google Maps - Google's transit and walking directions are limited in Korea.
- •Papago tends to handle Korean more naturally than Google Translate.
- •Check K-Style Trip for concerts, restaurants, and lodging in five languages, plus real visitor reviews and travel routes on the board.
